Outreach & Community

Irish Heritage is passionate about the impact music can have on the lives of individual people of all ages and on society as a whole which is why it started an “Outreach and Community” programme in 2019.

Community Programme

In delivering its programme Irish Heritage’s first initiative was to collaborate with the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith in west London. The centre is a venue for older members of the community who participate in afternoon activities.

Because this group are often afraid to use public transport in the evenings, they are denied access to live performances of classical music. Irish Heritage started a series of monthly afternoon recitals to enable the people concerned to learn about and experience music from the classical genre. The recitals were delivered at a nominal cost and featured award-winning musicians from the charity’s bursary programme.

In introducing the programme the charity has three objectives:

  • To take live music to members of the community who, for whatever reason, are unable to access it.
  • To present music to young people at the right time. Children can learn important life skills through music — communication, confidence building, teamwork and much more. By introducing them to music they receive the keys to a world they can unlock and revisit for the rest of their lives - an extraordinary gift for any young person.
  • To bring the benefits of music as therapy to those that are unable to access such a service.

Outreach Programme

The charity’s plans start an outreach programme in schools in spring 2020 had to be put on hold due to the arrival of Covid-19.

All being well these plans and other initiatives will be revived in 2021 when the pandemic is under control.
