Jamie Howe

Violist

Born in Belfast in 2002, Jamie Howe has recently completed his third year at the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying viola and violin. Formerly Head Boy at Chetham’s School of Music, Jamie began his viola studies with Graham Oppenheimer and is now under the tutelage of Jon Thorne. Whilst at Chetham’s, Jamie had the opportunity of working with the Manchester Camerata and took part in a recording of a Mozart piano concerto with Jean-Efflam Bavouzet under the direction of Gábor Takács-Nagy.

Jamie has played with the Academy Symphony Orchestra conducted by Semyon Bychkov, Sir Mark Elder and John Wilson amongst others. He recently completed the Professional Experience Scheme with the Ulster Orchestra and has since been invited to do some professional deputy work. Jamie is a former principal viola in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and is the current principal in the Ulster Youth Orchestra. He has enjoyed masterclasses with Clifton Harrison, Jane Atkins and Garth Knox.

As a member of the Regency String Quartet since his second year at the Academy, Jamie has performed in many venues in London and has been involved in a schools outreach programme called Project String Quartet, as well as a chamber music concert as part of the Melbourne Festival in Derbyshire. An avid fan of chamber music, Jamie has performed in the World Harp Congress in a flute, harp and viola trio. Most recently, Jamie was selected to attend the Camerata Ireland Academy - a young artist development programme under the direction of Barry Douglas. On completion of his undergraduate degree, Jamie hopes to undertake further studies before embarking on a full-time career in the profession.
